Abstract
Gray cast iron is one of the most widely used cast irons in the metal industry. This cast iron has low toughness. So alloying elements are needed to increase the toughness of gray cast iron. The alloying element in question is silicon (Si). This research aims to determine the chemical composition, microstructure and toughness of gray cast iron before and after adding silicon (Si). The method used is an experimental method by carrying out a casting process by adding 100 grams, 150 grams and 200 grams of silicon powder to gray cast iron, then testing the chemical composition using an Optical Emission Spectrocopy (EOS) test equipment, microstructure testing using SEM test equipment, and toughness test using the Charpy method. After testing, data on the composition of silicon in the raw material was 2.466% by weight, with the addition of 100 grams of silicon it was 3.067% by weight, with the addition of 150 grams of silicon it was 2.981% by weight, and with the addition of 200 grams of silicon it was 3.304% by weight. The impact price at 2.466% silicon by weight is 0.058 Joule/mm2, at 2.981% silicon by weight is 0.063 Joule/mm2, at 3.067% silicon by weight is 0.062 Joule/mm2, and at 3.304% silicon by weight is 0.064 Joule/mm2. So it can be concluded that the higher the silicon content, the higher the toughness of gray cast iron.
