Abstract

Workers play important roles in an economy in addition to natural factors and capital, and the success of a country’s development depends on the quality of workers. Manufacturing sector is one of the sectors that absorbs a lot of workers and is a leading sector because it has a dominant contribution to the economy in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of mean years of schooling, life expectancy, the number of small and micro manufacturing establishments, and the input of small and micro manufacturing on the number of small and micro manufacturing workers in each province in Indonesia from 2015 to 2021 using a Fixed Effects Model (FEM) panel data regression. Partially, the number of small and micro manufacturing establishments, the input of small and micro manufacturing, and mean years of schooling had a positive effect on the number of small and micro manufacturing workers, while life expectancy had a negative effect. Based on the results, the government is expected to cooperate with small and micro manufacturing establishments to create new job opportunities and improve the quality of workers by providing training to improve the skills of job seekers. In addition, the government is also expected to coordinate with Bank of Indonesia and the banking sector to regulate interest rates to facilitate the starting of micro and small businesses.
