Abstract

Cultivating scientific literacy is the ability to understand science, communicate and apply science to solve problems. This research aims to (1) describe the cultivation of scientific literacy before learning science, (2) describe the cultivation of scientific literacy during science learning and (3) explore the cultivation of scientific literacy after grade 4 science learning at the Tambak 2 Elementary School, Klaten Regency. This research is a type of qualitative research with an ethnographic research design. Data collection techniques in this research are interviews, observation and documentation. The results of this research show that scientific literacy at Tambak 2 Elementary School is implemented before science learning activities, namely that students will be directed to read books related to science for approximately 15 minutes. There are several stages in implementing scientific literacy when learning science, the first stage is the concept planting stage. The concept stage is carried out with reading activities guided by the class teacher, the second stage is the concept development stage. This stage carries out activities to solve a problem given by the teacher. The third stage is the application of the concept in problem solving practice with the study group. After the science learning activities at Tambak 2 Elementary School, the teacher together with the students concluded the learning activities that had been carried out. This activity is a scientific literacy activity after learning.
