Abstract

This research is a study of the analysis of subtitle translations in In The Heights movie by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes based on the stage musical of the same name by Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The objectives of this thesis are (1) To find and group the types of idiomatic expression found in “In The Heights” movie. (2) To describe the level of accuracy of Indonesian translation of idiomatic expression that found in “In The Heights” movie. This research data is a collection of words, sentences and dialogue that contain idioms in the film In The Heights. The data source comes from the dialogue script document in the film In The Heights. Data collection techniques were carried out in three ways, namely watching films, organizing data through film scripts, and presenting it using coding and tables. To validate this research data, researchers used triangulation techniques. To validate this research data, researchers used triangulation techniques. The data was analysed using descriptive analysis techniques, then the data was grouped according to Hockett's (1982) theory of six types of idioms and its accuracy was analysed using Larson's (1984) theory of three translation accuracy criteria. Data analysis was carried out through several stages, namely grouping idioms, analysing the idioms according to their type, translating and analysing translation accuracy, and drawing conclusions. The research findings follow with an explanation: (1) the type of idiom most often found in the film In The Heights is Figure of Speech (80%), below that is slang (17%), Substitute (2%), and English Phrasal Compounds (1%), the Proper Names and Abbreviations idiom types were not found. (2) the results of the analysis of the accuracy of the translation of idioms in the In The Heights, researchers found that most of the translations produced were clear (C).
