Abstract

College studies are the final stage of formal education for students, where academic stress, triggered by factors such as optimism, resilience, and excessive workload, can disrupt their mental and physical well-being. This research intended to examine the influence of optimism and resilience on academic stress in Muslim students. The major hypothesis of this research is that optimism and resilience influence academic stress in Muslim students. While the minor hypothesis is that there is a negative influence between optimism and academic stress for Muslim students, there is a negative influence between resilience and academic stress for Muslim students. Moreover, this research used quantitative correlational methods. The population of this research is Muslim students. The sampling technique employed incidental sampling; the sample was made up of 250 Muslim students. The data collection method utilized an optimism scale, a resilience scale, and an academic stress scale. This research analyzed the data through multiple regressions. The research results revealed that the major hypothesis was accepted, showing a significant influence between optimism and resilience on academic stress (F = 88.427; p = 0.000; p < 0.01). Furthermore, optimism has a very significant negative influence on academic stress (t = -3.399; p = 0.000; p<0.01), as well as resilience, specifically there is a very significant negative influence (t = -7.393; p=0.000; p<0.01). From the analysis results, the effective contribution of this research reached 41.7%, where resilience had a greater influence at 29.9%, while optimism contributed 11.8%. As many as 58,3% of other factors influence academic stress, which this research did not examine.
