Abstract

This study aims to 1) Describe the form of Indonesian spelling mistakes in the description texts of grade XI students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. 2) Explain the causes of spelling mistakes in students' essays. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data in this research is in the form of words or sentences from the students' description texts. The data source in this research is the document of students' description essay of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. Data collection techniques in this study were observation, written tests, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique in this research uses interactive analysis, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that there are 23 errors in the use of letters, which include 10 capitalization errors and 13 italicization errors. There are 12 misuse of letters which include 9 mistakes in writing prepositions and 3 mistakes in writing abbreviations or acronyms. There are 5 punctuation errors, including 2 period (.) errors, 2 comma (,) errors, and 2 punctuation errors. Some of the factors that cause spelling errors are confusion, lack of student understanding of the use of good and correct spelling according to PUEBI, lack of student literacy about spelling, besides that the language used daily also affects writing activities.
