Abstract

The innovative development of lightweight bricks with silica fume addition has a positive impact on various aspects of construction and the environment. It is an important step in producing strong, lightweight, efficient and sustainable building materials. Generally, lightweight bricks have low compressive strength, so additional silica fume is used to increase the compressive strength to obtain the ideal combination of high strength and light weight. This study aims to analyze the use of silica fume on the mechanical properties of foam mortar lightweight bricks. The proposed foam mortar mixture is an experimental result of cement and sand with a ratio of 1:3 and 1:5, the use of 10% silica fume as an additive with samples measuring 150 x 150 mm with treatment for 14 days before testing compressive strength and absorption according to (SNI 8640, 2018). The quality of the materials was checked by several tests, namely organic matter content, SSD, specific gravity and absorption, mud content and grain size of fine aggregates. The results showed that the compressive strength of the MB-N 1:3 sample was 2.63 MPa, higher than the MB-SF10% 1:3 sample of 1.13 MPa. While the MB-SF10% 1:5 sample reached a compressive strength of 0.63 MPa, higher than the MB-N 1:5 sample which reached 0.53 MPa. The results show that silica fume blending increases the compressive strength more optimally at the proportion of 1:5 compared to the proportion of 1:3. The addition of high silica fume composition resulted in lower flow values, as well as lower mortar contents compared to normal mortar. All samples meet the absorption specification with a maximum of 25%. Therefore, according to (SNI 8640, 2018) only the MB-N 1:3 sample meets all specifications and is categorized as type IIA non-structural brick.
