Abstract
As a consequence of the city of Surakarta's position in the province of Central Java, there has been a reduction in the amount of green open space as a direct result of the growing demand for land usage in the city for the building of a variety of urban infrastructure. Within the boundaries of this province is the city of Surakarta. One of the things that contributes to the scarcity of green and open space is the increase in the number of people living in a region. There has been an increase in the quantity of residential building as a direct result of the expansion in the total population. In general, the function that vegetation serves in an ecosystem is connected to the maintenance of a stable ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen in the atmosphere, the enhancement of the physical, chemical, and biological qualities of the soil, the regulation of soil water management, the prevention of flooding and the management of erosion, and the control of these occurrences. Vegetation also plays a role in the management of these processes. The following is a list of the goals that this research effort aims to accomplish: (1) to estimate the quantity of open green space that is now available in Surakarta City, and (2) to establish the degree of plant density that is currently present in Surakarta City. The data gathering and analysis for this research made use of descriptive statistics as well as a methodology known as the Forest Canopy Density (FCD) method. The conclusions of this research indicate that the overall area of green open space amounts to 860,179 hectares, which represents 18.4% of the total area. According to this calculation, Surakarta City does not yet fulfill the standards for green open space, and it still has to reach an extra 11.6% in order to meet the minimum requirements for green open space that are stipulated for urban areas. The amount of vegetation that covers an area may be divided into one of three categories within the city of Surakarta: places that are completely devoid of vegetation, regions that have a low vegetation density, and areas that have a medium vegetation density. Because there are so many people living in Surakarta City, the city does not have a high vegetation density class. This is due to the fact that there are so many people living there. This is because there are so many people living in such a small area.
