Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with a majority of its population being Muslim, where alcohol consumption is a behavior prohibited by religion and considered deviant. The perspective of addiction has several dimensions, such as unethical behavior, disease, and maladaptive behavior. This research focuses on understanding the addiction to alcohol consumption among Muslim students using qualitative research methods to capture meaning and understanding. The instrument used in this study is in-depth interviews. Research informants were selected using the snowball sampling method. The informants of this study are five Muslim students who consume alcohol. Based on the research findings, it is shown that peer influence plays a significant role in influencing students to start consuming alcohol. This aligns with the concept of conformity in social learning theory. Stress, curiosity, escapism from problems, and desire to consume were mentioned as motivations. Perceptions about alcohol vary, with some informants considering it normal and feeling accustomed, while others are aware of its negative impacts. Consumption habits differ, with some consuming more frequently. Consumption habits of alcohol are formed as a response to stress or pressure.
