Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a fairly high level of disaster. In handling the negative impacts that arise, the government often coordinates with various elements, one of which is SAR volunteers. This study aims to understand and describe how meaningful the lives of SAR volunteers are. This research is a qualitative research using descriptive narrative method, collecting data using semi-structured interviews, selecting participants using a purposive sampling technique, and analyzing data using thematic techniques. The criteria for this study were SAR volunteers who had been active for at least 2 years. The results of this study are in accordance with the meaningfulness of life according to Bastaman (2007) in the self-understanding aspect of volunteers having the motivation to want to help others who need their help. In the aspect of directed activity, volunteers improve their abilities and establish relationships as a support to facilitate their activities in the field. Then in the aspect of self-attachment, volunteers remain persistent and persevere even though they experience many difficulties. Then in the aspect of changing attitudes, SAR volunteers experienced a change in attitude to be more positive than before joining until now they are joined as SAR volunteers. In the aspect of social support, volunteers get support from those closest to them. Then in the aspect of the meaning of life, volunteers want to be useful for others.
