Abstract

The novel A Pair of White Swans for Palupi is interesting to explore in terms of lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion because in understanding a novel, it is not enough just to understand the meaning of the words. However, it must be equipped with supporting knowledge, such as knowledge about the cohesiveness and harmony of text forms. The aims of this study are 1) to describe the forms of lexical cohesion in the novel A Pair of White Swans for Palupi by Marliana Kusmawanti, 2) to describe the forms of grammatical cohesion in the novel A Pair of White Swans for Palupi by Marliana Kusmawanti, 3) to describe the implications of the results of lexical and grammatical cohesion studies in its implementation in learning Indonesian in high school. This research is a qualitative research. Of the 236 pages, there are 74 cohesion data in the novel A Pair of White Swans for Palupi by Marlina Kuswanti. From the 74 data found, there are 45 novel lexical cohesion data with details as follows: (1) 21 repetition data, (2) 12 synonym data. (3) antonymy of 6 data, (4) collocation of 2 data, (5) hyponymy of 2 data, and (6) 2 data of equivalence. There are 31 grammatical cohesion data in Marlina Kuswanti's novel A Pair of White Swans for Palupi, there are several grammatical aspects with the following details: (1) 9 data references, (2) 3 substitution data. (3) ellipses with 2 data, and (4) conjunctions with 17 data. This research can be used as a reference in learning Indonesian, especially in the subject matter of language because this research examines aspects of lexical and grammatical cohesion
