Abstract
Caries is an infection caused by demineralization of enamel and dentin which is closely related to consumption of cariogenic foods. Dental caries occurs due to the role of caries-causing bacteria, namely Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Lactobacillus, and Actinomyces. Dental caries often occurs in children because children tend to prefer sweet foods. School-age children still need the role of parents in maintaining healthy teeth and mouth, because at that age they still need guidance, attention, understanding, reminders as well as providing facilities that are obtained from parents. This study aims to determine the relationship between the role of parents in maintaining the oral health of school-age children with the degree of DMF-T and def-t. The method used is an analytical survey using a cross sectional study. Sampling used a purposive sampling technique, by examining the DMF-T index and def-t of students and parents/guardians filling out a questionnaire on the role of parents in maintaining children's dental and oral health, with a sample of 400 respondents. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank Correlation I test with a significance value of p<0.05. The results of data analysis obtained a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05) with a Correlation Coefficient value of -0.714. The results show that there is a relationship between the role of parents in maintaining the dental and oral health of school-age children with the degree of DMF-T and def-t, as well as the relationship between the role of parents in maintaining the oral health of school-age children with the degree of DMF-T and def-t not unidirectional, meaning that if the role of parents in maintaining the health of their children's teeth and mouth is good, the degree of DMF-T and def-t in children will decrease.
