Abstract

In the first year of study, students must be able to deal with various forms of change, difficulties and problems that occur and be able to survive under stressful conditions. It is important for first-year students to have high subjective well-being so that the learning process goes smoother in the following year. Students can look for sources of social support and foster a sense of optimism to maintain subjective well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support, optimism, and subjective well-being of first year students. This study uses a correlational quantitative approach. The subjects were 211 students of batch 2022 at Muhammadiyah University and Semarang State University. The sampling technique used is incidental sampling. The data analysis technique used is multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS version 24. The data results show that there is a very significant positive relationship between social support, optimism and subjective well-being as evidenced by the value of R=0.707 and p=0.00 (p<0 , 01). There is a relationship between social support and subjective well-being as evidenced by the value of r=0.651 and p=0.00 (p<0.01). There is a relationship between optimism and subjective well-being as evidenced by the value of r=0.635 and p=0.00 (p<0.01). The effective contribution of the independent variables in this study amounted to 49.9%, of which 26.8% was influenced by the social support variable and 23.1% was influenced by the optimism variable. The categorization results show that first year students have high subjective well-being with a percentage of 45.02%, as well as high social support with a percentage of 48.82%, and high optimism with a presentation of 40.76%. The implications of the results of this study indicate that first year students are quite prosperous, with the right social support making students optimistic and feel prosperous.
