Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of ambiguity and explain how to disambiguate the ambiguity word, phrase or sentences found in the English for University (2015) textbook by Thalib. This research used descriptive qualitative with content analysis as the method used in the research. This study used the English for University Students (2015) textbook by Thalib as the object of research. Data sources were ambiguous words or sentences contained in the lexical, surface structure and deep structure levels. The results of the study found that: (1) in the types of ambiguity found, the results of the study show that there are four sub-types found in the English textbook: lexical ambiguity (homonymy and polysemy) and surface structure ambiguity (a coordinate head with one modifier and a head with inner and outer modifier), (2) the researcher used paraphrasing, adding preposition ‘of’, moving sentence construction, and adding additional context to disambiguate the ambiguity word, phrase or sentences. It was concluded that people need a good understanding of English to comprehend the language in the textbook.
