Abstract
Al-jahl in Indonesian can be interpreted as stupidity. Stupidity is a state and situation when there is a lack of knowledge of something that is subjective. Stupidity is one of the traits that is highly condemned in the Qur'an, because stupidity can plunge humans into disobedience, misguidance and destruction. Stupidity can infect anyone, not only rural people who are illiterate. An 'alim can be stupid under certain conditions or even a memorizer of the Qur'an can also be stupid. Stupidity can also cause someone to be ungrateful to Allah's favors and can lead to disbelief. There are 24 verses in the Qur'an which explain ignorance and the prohibition to approach stupidity. The research in this thesis aims to describe the meaning of al-jahl in the Koran according to Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusy in the book of commentaries Al-Bahru Al-Muhith. Therefore, this research was conducted using descriptive analysis, in which the researcher objectively explained the meaning of al-jahl in the Qur'an according to Abu Hayyan in the book of interpretations Al-Bahru Al-Muhith and analyzed the collected data, especially those that related to al-jahl in the Qur'an. And in this study, researchers took from primary data, namely the book of interpretations of Al-Bahru Al-Muhith and secondary data sources, namely searching for and exploring other works such as: books, dissertations, theses, journals, papers or other research results that are related to the results of this study. After this research was completed, the researcher concluded that Ignorance is divided into 2, namely stupidity al-jahlu al-basith and al-jahlu al-murokkab. Al-jahlu al-basith, namely not having knowledge, which is divided into two groups, namely: first; have no knowledge at all and the second; have knowledge but only partially, for example; know that the act committed is a disobedience but do not know the consequences. As for al-Jahlu al-Murokkab, namely having the knowledge that what is being done is a disobedience and knowing the consequences of his actions, but still doing it on purpose. And the sentence of stupidity (al-jahl) which uses the form of the word fi'il, namely تجهلون and يجهلون denotes a stupid act (immorality or disbelief or polytheism) that is committed, while the culprit is indicated by the word ism, namely الجاهل, الجاهلين and الجاهلون. As for the word al-jahl which uses mashdar namely جهالة indicating the state (things) of a person when he commits such stupidity, and lafadz جهولا shows the character of a person who commits disobedience or stupidity. As for the word الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ in the Qur'an, according to Abu Hayyan, it means the period of ignorance before the arrival of Islam.
