Abstract
The impostor syndrome is a phenomenon in which a person with a good achievement or performance feels like they have deceived others about their intelligence and abilities, doubts their own abilities, and believes that their success is due to external factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of the impostor phenomenon among UMS campus merdeka participants. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The research participants were five people selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the data analysis technique used was descriptive analysis. The study results revealed that the informant's impostor syndrome behavior was divided into five behaviors, namely feeling that their achievement was due to external attribution, self-perception of incompetence, comparing themselves to others, reflecting the inability to acknowledge praise and good performance, and the feeling of giving others a wrong impression. The factors that influenced impostor syndrome among the informants were expectations from others (family, friends, mentors, and others) and evaluation. Coping strategies used by the informants to deal with impostor syndrome were seeking help from others through sharing experiences, storytelling, social support, and avoidance. Another finding in this study was that during the UMS campus merdeka program, the informants developed new skills and applied new knowledge. This study encourages readers to reflect on how students view failure and is useful for understanding how institutions and individuals can work together to help students create support systems for those who experience or are at risk of experiencing impostor syndrome, leading to better achievement success.
