Abstract
The unequal treatment of persons with disabilities can be seen from the number of facilities and infrastructure that are still somewhat inadequate. The society's attitude towards people with disabilities is also still biased by assuming that it is a disgrace that should be avoided. In the studi of Tafsir Al-Aazhar by Hamka, the issue of disability has never been raised in any research. Whereas, there are several signs of disabilities mentioned in al-Qur’an, such as deaf, dumb, blind, and limp. This research is a literature research, which is research that is based on books, journals, papers, historical records or so on that are guaranteed to be genuine, valid, and authentic. This study attempted to answer how Hamka interpreted the signs of diability in al-Qur’an by using descriptive interpretative method. Out of 39 verses which were found to have signs of disability, there were five verses which refer to disability. These verses that are found to have signs of disability are Q.S. Āli `Imrān: 49; Q.S. Al-Mā’idah: 110; Q.S. An-Nūr: 61; Q.S. Al-Faṭ: 17; and Q.S. `Abasa: 2. According to Hamka, disability in the al-Qur’an has meanings as, 1) a way to verify the greatness of Allah through the miracle of Prophet `Isa a.s.; 2) an instruction for Muslims to treat fellow human beings equally without any social discrimination; and 3) an allowance for sufferers not to participate in war because it can endanger their lives.
