Abstract
Film media is a mass media capable of providing a significant impact in the process of conveying its message. Feminism is a women's movement and effort that demands emancipation or equal rights and justice. Currently, the number of films that carry the theme of feminism is increasing. One of them is the film Layla Majnun, through this film it is shown how female characters try to convey the message of feminism to the public. This study aims to analyze the representation of liberal feminism in the film Layla Majnun and to find out the meaning to be conveyed through semiotic meaning. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive method by studying feminism as depicted in the film Layla Majnun using Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling. Data collection techniques used through observation techniques by watching and analyzing the film Layla Majnun. Data is validated by using source triangulation technique. The results in this study are (1) women who support the rights of their people (2) career women (3) women in fighting for the right to freedom (4) women in making decisions (5) women who are strong and brave. The film Layla Majnun illustrates the existence of a patriarchal culture and gender stereotypes that seek to educate the audience about female virgins who are capable and deserve to be equal to men. Liberal feminists want women to be free from oppressive gender roles.
