Abstract
The 3-phase induction motor is the most widely used driving component in the industrial world. The problem that exists in induction motors is that when starting the motor, the motor starting current can reach five to seven times the nominal current. The phenomenon of increasing the initial current when starting the induction motor can result in a voltage drop in the supply voltage. The cause of the high starting current in the motor is because the electric motor requires a large starting torque in order to fight its inertia and load inertia from rest. The purpose of this study is to determine the value of the starting current of a 3-phase induction motor when using the DOL (Direct On Line) star delta circuit, variable frequency drive, to find out which circuit is safer to use on an induction motor so that the impact of the starting current is not bad. The research method that will be used begins with a literature study, circuit design on a 3-phase induction motor, data collection, comparing and analyzing the data obtained. The results of this study show that the DOL method has a high starting current reaching 5 times the nominal current, while the star delta method has a smoother starting current than the DOL which is 4 times the nominal current, and the VFD method has a very fast starting current back to the current. nominal value, namely at the 4th second, from the three methods that have been studied, the VFD method is recommended to be used but with expensive prices and maintenance.
