Abstract

The prevalence of dental caries according to RISKESDAS in 2018 throughout Indonesia reached 88.8%, for the age group 5-9 years the prevalence of caries reached 92.6%, the age group 10-14 years was 73.4%, the largest caries rate experienced by children. In the development of the medical world, caries can be cured by using herbal plants, one of which is tea. The tea plant contains substances that can act as anti-caries. Another benefit of tea plants is immunomodulator which is compound that functions to influence the immune response in the body. To determine the potential effect of tea as immunomodulator and anticaries which has several ingredients such as cathechin which functions to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause caries and as immunomodulator. The cathechin-polysaccharide complex has been shown to increase phagocytic activity and important component of green tea immunomodulatory activity. The content of EGCG in green tea has anticariogenic properties and is one of the most active substances in green tea. In addition to EGCG, green tea contains hydroxyl-rich polyphenols that can inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes involved in the caries process. There is an effect of tea extract as immunomodulator and anticaries in the content of green tea and black tea, catechins, polyphenols, and flavonoids. The content of catechins such as EGC, EGCG can increase immunomodulatory activity in green tea and polyphenols contain strong antibacterial properties can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans as the cause of caries.
