Abstract

Introduction: Overweight is one of the nutritional problems that often occurs in adolescents, half of adolescents in Indonesia are overweight. Eating habits that exceed needs such as excessive fat and carbohydrate intake are one of the causes of being overweight. Meanwhile, knowledge related to nutrition is indirectly related to the incidence of being overweight. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge of balanced nutrition, fat intake, and carbohydrate intake with the incidence of overweight in adolescents at SMAN 4 Surakarta. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with random sampling. The research subjects were 85 people. Data on the incidence of overweight based on body mass index for age (BMI/U) were obtained from measurements of weight and height. Balanced nutrition knowledge data was taken using a questionnaire of 25 questions and data on fat and carbohydrate intake was taken using the semi quantitative food frequency quesitionare (SQ-FFQ) method for the past 1 month. Data analysis using the Person Product Moment test. Results: The results of this study indicate that most of the knowledge of balanced nutrition in adolescents is in the good category (56.4%), fat intake is in the less category (49.4%), and carbohydrate intake is in the higher category (35.2%). There was no relationship between knowledge of balanced nutrition and carbohydrate intake with the incidence of overweight (p = 0.138 ; p = 0.566), but there was a relationship between fat intake (p = 0.010) and the incidence of overweight. Conclusion: fat intake is associated with the incidence of overweight, therefore, adolescents need to meet nutritional intake in accordance with general guidelines for balanced nutrition. Keywords:
