Abstract
This study aims to compare the effect of the surface distance of the coil on the induction heater with the surface of the carbon steel specimen, or by varying the diameter of the specimen, namely with a diameter of 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm. After all the carbon steel specimens were heated by induction heating and reached the austenite phase, then quenching was carried out with ice water as a medium. The results of the microstructure observation showed that in each specimen the ferrite grain size was smaller at the edges than at the center, and the pearlite grain size at the edges was larger than at the center, so that the hardness was higher at the edges than in the middle. This can also be proven from the results of the micro Vickers hardness test. Then the diameter size affects the grain size of ferrite and pearlite on the observation of microstructure and hardness. In specimens with a diameter of 4 mm obtained 213.6 VHN, 193.7 VHN, and 190.1 VHN. In specimens with a diameter of 5 mm, 282.2 VHN, 213.6 VHN, and 193.7 VHN were obtained. And on specimens with a diameter of 6 mm obtained 263.7 VHN, 257.9 VHN, and 252.3 VHN.
