Abstract

Retarder is an auxiliary chemical to slow down the setting time so that the mixture will remain workable for a longer time. Its use is to delay the setting time of concrete, for example with hot weather conditions, long distances or extending the compaction time to avoid cold joints and avoid the impact of decreasing when the concrete is fresh when casting is carried out. In this literature study, a resume of three studies related to setting time and compressive strength of concrete was carried out with the addition of different types of retarders, namely granulated sugar, citric acid and baking powder. It was found that the best retarder additive was citric acid when compared to sugar and baking powder, seen from the comparison between the initial bonding time of cement and the compressive strength of concrete.
