Abstract
The rapid development in the metal industry at this time demands the availability of good quality materials, mechanical properties of metal materials such as: toughness, hardness and wear resistance. To improve the mechanical properties of metal materials, it is necessary to add alloying elements to the composition of metal materials. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of nickel and magnesium on the composition, microstructure, and hardness of nodular cast iron. This study uses FCD as the main material and then melted in an induction furnace. The process of forming spherical graphite cast iron is carried out with an open ladle system, adding 400 grams of nickel and 400 grams of magnesium which are placed at the bottom of the 10 kg capacity ladle just before the molten metal is poured into the ladle. The results showed thatalloy compositions of cast iron having a magnesium content exceeding AFS required levels. The increasing percentage of Ni and Mg content in nodular cast iron resulted in larger spherical graphite grains, more ferrite and less pearlite. Meanwhile, based on the hardness test method, the hardness value decreased by 7.809% with the increase in the percentage of nickel and magnesium.
