Abstract

Conditions with mental health problems cause 1 in 5 years to live with a disability. Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research, more than 19 million Indonesians aged over 15 years experience mental and emotional disorders, and at the same age, more than 12 million people experience depression (Rokom, 2021). Mental illness issues in Indonesia are high but have not yet can be accommodated because the facilities and infrastructure are still limited. In addition, stigma still covers psychiatric problems in Indonesia (Indrayani & Wahyudi, 2019). The biophilic concept implies that humans have a biological need for connection with nature at the physical, social, and mental levels which affect personal well-being, productivity, and so on (Duarte, 2015). The benefits of the biophilic concept are very influential on mental health and human well-being. Departing from the issue of mental health and the goodness of the biophilic concept for mental health, the author proposes a Mental Health Hospital design that will become a special infrastructure to accommodate the community with mental health problems from an early age using a biophilic architectural approach. The biophilic architecture will be combined with the architectural concept for well-being and create a space that can be felt by the surrounding community as a positive contribution, to connecting the community with mental patients in reducing stigma.
