Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding method. Welding is carried out to connect components with nodular cast iron material and the microstructure of the material after welding is seen by using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at magnifications of 1500 and 5000 times. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a tool for observing the microstructure contained in a material. The surface of the workpiece or sample is scanned with electrons and the reflected electron beam is then collected, after which it is displayed on a screen through a specific detector. This research was conducted using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding method with a current of 75-90 V and the specimen was given a seam of 450 with 4 layers of workmanship. This research resulted in the weld area, HAZ region, and base metal region which in the weld area showed graphite and pearlite phases, while in the HAZ region there were graphite, fine pearlite, and coarse pearlite phases. In the base metal region, graphite, pearlite, and ferrite phases are known. From the description above, the welded nodular cast iron is cast iron which is dominated by the pearlite phase.
