Abstract

This study aims to the effect of austempering process at 300 °C temperature for 90 minutes of microstructure and toughness of nodular cast iron. The heat treatment method is carried out on nodular cast iron material by austenitation at a temperature of 850oC and holding for 1 hours, followed by quenching using salt bath until it reaches a temperature of 300 oC and ends with a austempering process at 300oC for 90 minuites and cooled at room temperature. The results of the microstructure test show that the phase of the material with the austempering treatment has changed to a graphite and pearlite phase and the size of the graphite has changed to be larger than the raw material. Toughness testing was carried out using the impact test method, the results showed that the material with the austempering treatment had tougher properties than the raw material, judging from the comparison of the impact value and the fracture pattern of the austempering and raw material treated material.
