Abstract

The film “The Platform” (2019) is a film by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia which tells the story of living in a vertical prison called “Vertical Self-Management Centre”. The purpose of this research is to find out how the film describes social criticism. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes which has a process of meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. The unit of analysis in this research is the scenes and dialogues in the film. The sample are several scenes containing messages of social criticism. The results obtained from this study found the following findings: (1) The meaning of denotation and conotation in this film provides an understanding of how living system works and human attitudes in their efforts to adapt to the system and conflicts in it. (2) the myth that can be concluded in this research is a reflection of society and the social inequality that occurs.
