Abstract

This research has purpose to 1) identify the indicators of prejudice and stereotype in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asian, 2) describe prejudice and stereotype depicted in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asian, and 3) reveal the reasons why Kevin Kwan address prejudice and stereotype in Crazy Rich Asian Novel. The type of this research was qualitative research employing descriptive method. The data were the content of the novel by Kevin Kwan’s ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ 2013. It was in the form of sentences and dialogues or utterances of the main characters in the novel. The steps of collecting the data were: collecting the data source, reading the novel, finding the data that related to the material object and theory that would be used in this research, taking a note from the sources that related to the data from the novel, underlying the word, phrase, sentence, and paragraph that related with this research, encoding the data, and drawing the conclusion from the result of that analysis. Result of the research showed that 1) The indicators for prejudice in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asian are antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attacks, and extermination. Meanwhile, the stereotype is indicated by the role of woman in patriarchal capitalism and ethnocentrism. 2) There were two stereotypes that appear in the novel, those were gender stereotype and ethnic stereotype. 3) Kevin Kwan addressed stereotype and prejudice into his novel to rejects the idea of women’s reductive worth when her work is not exercised to pander to fathers, husbands or the state. In this way, his novel advocates for an initial radicalism by dismantling power/ gender relations within the corporate elite class.
