Abstract
The object of the study is a movie 2012 directed by Roland Emmerich. The study is to reveal how tension between lower and upper class in escaping from disaster reflected in 2012 directed by Roland Emmerich published in 2009. The objective of the study is to analyze the structural elements in the movie and to analize tension between lower and upper class in escaping of the movie based on Marxist approach. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as a type of the research. The data sources divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the events of the movie and script of 2012 and the secondary data source is biography of character. The method of collecting data is documentation. The technique of analyzing data is descriptive. The result of the study is as follows. First, based on the structural analysis, Roland Emmerich delivers a moral message that everybody has a right to reach their prosperity in life and the structural elements are related to each other and form a unity. Second, based on the Marxist analysis, Roland Emmerich reflects the tension between lower class and upper class by represent the Marxist issues and criticizes the social economic condition that discriminate the treatment between lower class and upper class in escaping from disaster.
