Abstract
Nodular cast iron is known as clay cast iron, which contains graphite in the form of spherical nodules, ferrite and pearlite. Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is an electric flame arc welding that uses electrodes as an additional material (fill material). Thermal energy in the Shield Metal Arc Welding process is generated due to the electric ion jumps (cathode and anode) that occur at the tip of the electrode and the surface of the material. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process on the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of nodular cast iron. This study used the main material of FCD which was cut and prepared into two specimens, then tensile testing of the specimens was carried out before and after welding. The results showed that the specimen before welding produced a tensile strength value of 562.99 N/mm² while for the specimen after welding it was 191.79 N/mm². This shows that with the addition of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process, the tensile strength decreased by 65.93%. Then the value of the modulus of elasticity shows that the test specimen before welding is 4.925 N/mm² while the specimen after welding is 1.875 N/mm². This shows that the modulus of elasticity of nodular cast iron has decreased by 61.92%.
