Abstract
This study explains the pragmatics equivalence and violations maxims in Divergent movie and novel. The objectives of the study are classifying the types of violations of Grice maxims both of movie and novel Divergent, describing the pragmatic equivalence of violations maxims in the movie and novel Divergent and describing the similarities and the differences of translation strategy of violations maxim between movie and novel Divergent. It is a qualitative paper. The objects of this study are violations maxims and pragmatic equivalence in the movie and novel Divergent. The data were English and Indonesia violations maxims that contain of direct utterances. There are two kinds of techniques of analyzing data used in this research. First, the analysis used document review, and the second one is assessing/rating/judging the translation quality dealing with pragmatic equivalence. The result of the study as follows; firstly, this current study found 35 data from movie subtitle and 139 data of novel translation categorized as violation maxims. Secondly, the findings were dominated by violation maxim of quality with 11 data (31.4%) in movie and 45 data (32.4%) in novel translation. Thirdly, In the movie subtitle, from 34 data noted that the all data were 100% could be judge or rated as “accurate translation” based on the qualitative parameter of pragmatic equivalence. Morever, in the novel translation from 139 data noted that there were 137 data of 98.56% data could be judged or rated as “accurate translation” based on the qualitative parameter of pragmatic equivalence. There were two data from 139 data (1,43% ) that could be rated as “less accurate translation” according to the qualitative parameter of pragmatic equivalence. This study did not find any translation could be rated as not accurate. Finally, the conclusion of the comparison between the movie subtitle and novel translation of Divergent, this study highlights the strategy used by the translator in translating the violation maxims of both movie subtitle and novel translation. These strategies are addition of information, deletion information, and adoption. Those are intended to make the translation equivalent.
