Abstract

The purpose of this research is to test and analyze the mathematical critical thinking skills of grade IX junior high school students with reference to indicators of critical thinking skills, including (1) basic clarification, (2) giving reasons for a decision (the basic for the decision), (3) conclude (inference), (4) further clarification (advanced clarification), (5) supposition and integration. The type of research used descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were all student’s of class IX A SMP Negeri 2 Paninggaran, Pekalongan which consistend of 27 students with 10 men students and 17 woman students. Data collection techniques in this research were observation, test technique writing, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique was carried out through 3 components, namely data reduction, then data presentation and data verification. The result of this research are: (1) there are 2 students each 1 men and woman students are less able to meet the indicators of mathematical critical thinking skill so they fall into the low category, (2) there are 2 students each 1 men and woman students are able to meet the indicators of mathematical critical thinking skill but are still incomplete and inaccurate so that they are in the medium category, (3) there are 2 students each 1 men and woman students are able to meet all indicators of mathematical critical thinking skill with good and right so that it is included in the high category, (4) gender affects the differences in students’ mathematical critical thinking abilities, where woman are superior to man
