Abstract

This research paper is aimed to identify the types of assessment used by 8th semester students and explain the reasons for using the rejection strategy used. The data of the study is college by student consisting of 20 learns. There are nine questions which demand to the learners to show their politeness strategies on refusing to each level. Meanwhile, the data source is the utterances showing refusal produced by the English students of UMS as the response of the DCT (Discourse Completion Task). The analysis is done by using the researcher uses DCTQ (Discourse Completion Task Questionnaire) and used the theory from M. Demirezen 1993, Delahunty & Garvey 2010 to analyze the data. The researcher also uses coding to make easier in analyzing data. The result of this study shows that respondents mostly use negative compound utterance refusal type as much as 21.1% in rejection. In other side the reasearcher found that the reason of refusal strategies used refuse by reason 34.4%.
