Abstract

This study aims to describe: 1) the role of family education in building the character of students during the COVID-19 pandemic; 2) application of family education methods in building children's character; 3) character values ​​that develop in the family; 4) limits on parental authority on the child's position as a unique person in building the character of students; and 5) obstacles experienced by parents in implementing family education. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were parents, children, and teachers in Cetho, Gumeng, Jenawi, Karanganyar hamlets. The object of research is the role of family education in building the character of students. The data obtained in this study are qualitative data. While the primary data sources in this study were the results of interviews and observations. For secondary data sources in the form of related documents / archives. The data collection techniques used were interviews, observation, and documentation. The validity of the data was done using source triangulation and technique triangulation. This study uses data analysis according to Miles and Huberman. There are four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that: 1) the role of parents in building children's character in Cetho Hamlet was not optimal due to the lack of time for parents to accompany all children's activities; 2) in the implementation of family education, parents tend to be flexible in its implementation, not using a planned method or program; 3) character values ​​instilled in the family in the form of discipline, responsibility, independence, honesty, and religion; 4) parents provide several rules agreed upon with the family in implementing the limits of parental authority; 5) Meanwhile, the obstacles experienced by parents in implementing family education are more to assisting children in implementing online learning.
