Abstract
Pack carburizing is the simplest carburization method by using charcoal powder as a carbon enhancer. The objective of this research is to know the changes in microstructure and the value of the hardness after carburizing pack process. In this research, the materials used in carburizing pack process were St 60 steel and mixed wood charcoal that had already been crushed. Furthermore, charcoal with 100 mesh and 200 mesh has been mixed with alcohol. The particle size obtained from 100 dry mesh is 554,621 μm² se 200 mesh A grade produces an average carbon particle of 232,153 μm². From this test, the St 60 steel was mixed with charcoal then heating to a temperature of 825⁰C with a time of 4 hours. The results of observation on the average structure of carbon particles 232,153 μm² show an average of uncertain solubility in Fe (β%) of 5,77% and an average value of 255,6 kg/mm², while an average carbon particle of 554,621 μm² show an average solubility of the elements in Fe (β%) of 4,3% and has an average value of hardness of 214,6 kg/mm².
