Abstract

Skills to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate are needed in every problem solving. Most students solve problems without paying attention to problem solving skills so that problem solving stages are needed. The research aims to identify and analyze the stages of problem solving of the Higher Order Thingking Skill (HOTS) type of material on the Two Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) based on Krulik and Rudnick's steps in terms of the students' initial mathematical abilities. This type of research is qualitative research. The subjects of this study were two students with high, medium, and low initial math abilities of class VIII - C SMP Al Irsyad Surakarta. Data collection techniques in the form of tests, documentation and interviews. Data analysis techniques used data reduction, data writing, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results obtained, it shows that students with high initial metamatic abilities are unable to complete the flashback and extension stages and are able to reach the HOTS realm with indicators of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Students with moderate initial metamatic abilities are unable to complete the phase of finding answers and the flashback and extension stages and are able to reach the HOTS realm with indicators of analyzing, but not achieving indicators of evaluating and creating. Students with low initial mathematics abilities are not able to complete the stages of planning, finding answers, flashbacks and extensions and are unable to reach the HOTS realm with indicators of analyzing, evaluating, and creating.
