Abstract

This study aims to describe the error characteristics and causal factors for students who are high, medium, and low initial ability to solve Linear Program problems. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study consisted of 23 students of class XI IA 2 of SMA BATIK 2 Surakarta in the academic year 2018/2019. Data collection methods used in this study were tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was performed using the Newman’s Error Analysis method. Data analysis techniques through reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study, mistakes made by students with high initial abilities are errors in comprehension, transformation, process (process skill) and final writing (encoding). Then, mistakes made by students with moderate ability are errors in comprehension, transformation, process (process skill) and final writing (encoding). And, mistakes made by students with low initial abilities are reading type errors (comprehension), comprehension, transformation, process (process skill) and final writing (encoding).
