Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the Principal in improving teacher performance and any factors that could support and hinder in improving teacher performance in Batik 2 Vocational School, Surakarta 2017. The type of research used is qualitative. Qualitative research method is a research method that is based on the philosophy of positivism, which is used to examine the condition of natural objects (as opposed to experiments) where the researcher is a key instrument, purposive and snowball sampling, data collection techniques are carried out in triangulation (combined), data analysis is inductive / qualitative, and the results of qualitative research emphasize more meaning than generalization. this research was conducted at Surakarta Batik 2 Vocational High School. Data collection techniques make direct observations of the object under study and by interviewing to get information by asking directly with the respondent. The results in this study indicate that Principals in improving teacher performance continue to use several roles, namely teacher performance coaching, teacher supervision, teacher discipline guidance, control and supervision, providing motivation, and rewarding the performance achieved. Whereas the strategy used by school principals in improving teacher performance is through implementing disciplines according to rules, helping teachers improve behavior standards, motivating teachers by creating a harmonious environment, supervising each other in completing assignments, as well as giving rewards and punishments. conducted to improve teacher performance through activities such as workshops, trainings, motivational seminar training, subject teacher deliberations, research grants and professional writing so that some of these elements are sufficient to represent three aspects of teacher performance improvement (affective, cognitive, and psychomotor aspects. The supporting factor in improving teacher performance is the ease in equating the perception of teachers as instructors, while the inhibiting factor is that not all teachers have the same motivation in improving their performance, there are teachers who are old who cannot adjust to technological developments.
