Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of analyzing any errors made by students with the cognitive style of the Independent Field (FI) and Dependent Field (FD) in solving Algebraic questions in the form of stories based on the Polya Theory and what caused the error. The Polya theory consists of 4 stages, namely (1) Understanding the problem, (2) Planning the problem solving, (3) Carrying out the plan, and (4) Looking back. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The study was conducted on students of class VII A who took 4 students as research subjects, namely subject S-I, S-II, S-III, and S-IV. Data collection techniques used are: documentation, tests and interviews. the validity of the data using the technique triangulation method. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion / verification. The results of this study indicate that the errors of the Field Independent (FI) type students were conducted by S-I and S-II subjects, namely in stages: (1) Planning for problem solving, (2) Carrying out problem solving plans, and (3) Looking back. Whereas students' errors in the Field Dependent (FD) type were subjected to S-III and S-IV subjects, namely in stages (1) Understanding the problem, (2) Planning the problem solving, (3) Carrying out the planning, and (4) Looking back. It can be concluded that the mistakes made by the FI type students were less than the mistakes made by the FD type students.
