Abstract

The research purpose is to describe how to develop students english skill using english literacy program and Grammar Translation Method (GTM) on 5th grade student of SD Negeri Gemolong 1. The type of research used is qualitative with phenomenology design. This research uses observation, interview, and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed by data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the teacher's way to develop students' English skills is by memorizing the vocabulary and grammar that routine done once a month. Besides teachers, the school has a literacy program to improve students' English skills in the form of love reading or reading routine that conducted around 10-15 minutes before learning begins. The activities of love reading or reading routine are also done at the time of learning but accompanied by the use of Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The implementation of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is accompanied with student grouping strategies, media in the form of video and English music, and teaching style of rote memorazied and giving a questions that appropriate to the subject matter. The conclusion of this research is with the effort of teacher and school through love to reading or routine reading of literacy program and implementation of Grammar Translation Method (GTM) can improve English skill in 5th grade students at SD Negeri Gemolong 1.
