Abstract

This research paper aims at describing the teachers’ efforts to arouse the fifth year students’ motivation, the implementation of the efforts in teaching-learning process and the students’ response to the teacher’s giving motivation. This research is descriptive qualitative which does not include any calculation of statistic procedure. The researcher takes the teachers’ efforts to arouse the fifth year students of SD N 01 Jeruksawit Gondangrejo Karanganyar in 2007/2008 academic year as the object of her research. Method of collecting the data involves observation (non-participant observation) and interview. The data are taken from the subject of the research in the form of field note, interview, and document. The results of the study shows that 1) the teachers’ efforts to arouse the fifth-grade students’ motivation in learning English at SD N 01 Jeruksawit gondangrejo Karanganyar use several activities which include question and answer activity, a guessing activity, and singing activity combined with the use of media. All of those activities in teaching-learning process are proven to be able to increase the students’ motivation. Moreover, it could help them understand the lesson more easily, 2) the students’ response to the teacher’s giving motivation in learning English are positive. It can be seen from their interest and their enthusiasm in following the teaching-learning process. The students are braver, as well as more confident to speak and to express their feeling. Besides, the students have more concentration and become more active in the classroom.
