Abstract

The object of the study is the process of teaching writing descriptive text through group work at the first year in SMA N 8 Surakarta. The study is focused on the procedures of teaching writing descriptive text using group work at the first year of SMA N 8 Surakarta. The sources of data are from the process of teaching writing descriptive text, the procedures of teaching writing through group work, and from the documents. The methods of collecting data are observation, test, document, and interview. In analyzing the data, the quantitative data are analyzed using data reduction, data display, and verification. The qualitative data are analyzed using descriptive qualitative. The result of the research shows the following conclusion: Firstly, the group work method can improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. It makes the writing easier. Secondly, the process of teaching writing using group work to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text is success. When the technique is implemented, the class became noisy and alive than before, because the students discussed the ideas together in their group. The students’ responses is good, they are also more active to express their ideas in their group. Thirdly, the problems appear when group work technique is used sometimes some students are not serious to work and collaborate in their group work, but this problem can be minimalized by the election the members of the group work. Moreover, the result of the test showed the significant improvement. The mean score in cycle I is 60.50, in cycle II is 63.83, and in cycle III is 64.86. It can be said that teaching writing by using group work is successful.
