Abstract

Twitter is a social media platform that provides short writing features or commonly called tweets which usually contain 280 characters. The existence of social media makes interaction with other people from various regions easier, but the positive impacts are always side by side with negative impacts, including from social media, a problem can arise, one of which is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that exists in cyberspace. Cyberbullying arises because of the lack of empathy from fellow social media users, besides that the emotional maturity of the individual is also a factor in the emergence of cyberbullying. This research was conducted to examine the relationship between empathy and emotional maturity with cyberbullying behavior in adolescents on Twitter social media. In this study the method used is quantitative correlation using three scales, namely the empathy scale, the emotional maturity scale and the cyberbullying scale. The subjects in this study were 275 adolescents aged 13-18 years in the Greater Solo area who actively used Twitter, the sampling technique was quota sampling. Data analysis in this study used multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS version 16. The results of hypothesis testing in this study were that there was a significant negative relationship between empathy and cyberbullying, and a significant negative relationship between emotional maturity and cyberbullying. Based on the results of the three categorizations, the scale obtained the medium category. The effective contribution of empathy to cyberbullying is 13%, while emotional maturity contributes 21.8% to cyberbullying and the other 65.2% is influenced by other factor such as anonimity, disindividuation, lack of supervision and virality.
