Abstract
Introduction: According to WHO (World Health Organization) in 2013, complications of hypertension cause 9.4 million deaths annually worldwide. During January-September 2019, the proportion of hypertension cases in Surakarta was 26.5%. One of the risk factors for hypertension is obesity. Blood pressure can also be controlled with mineral intake, one of which is magnesium. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the description of BMI and magnesium intake among hypertensive and non hypertensive patients in Surakarta. Methodology: This type of research was descriptive research. The number of samples was 18 people, 8 samples for the hypertensive group and 10 samples for the non-hypertensive group. BMI data were obtained from direct measurements of body weight and height, while data on magnesium intake were obtained by interview using the FFQ form for the last 1 month. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of a frequency distribution table between variables. Results: The results showed that most of the nutritional status based on BMI in the hypertensive and non-hypertensive patient groups was in the normal category. Most of the respondents' magnesium intake in the hypertensive and non-hypertensive patient groups was in the sufficient category. Conclusion: Hypertensive patients had a higher mean BMI than patients without hypertension. Hypertensive patients had a greater mean magnesium intake than patients without hypertension.
