Abstract
This research examines English speaking anxiety among Indonesian EFL students, specifically eighth-grade students. Speaking anxiety is one of the most significant issues that influence learners' confidence and commitment in English-speaking activities. This research will identify the main causes of speaking anxiety, monitor how students cope with it, and discuss teachers' roles in minimizing such anxiety. In this qualitative descriptive study, data collection was conducted by using classroom observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Three salient reasons behind speech anxiety emerge from the findings: Communication Apprehension (CA), Test Anxiety (TA), and Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE). Students are primarily anxious, not confident, and apprehensive about mispronouncing words during public speaking. Test anxiety serves to increase even more their apprehension towards public speaking with Grade and performance-measuring anxieties. To overcome such anxiety, the students turn to coping strategies like peer practice, pre-reading notes before they are presented, and visualizing a conducive learning environment. Teachers also have important roles in lowering the students' anxiety levels by giving them a supportive learning environment, providing feedback, and using interactive teaching mechanisms. This research emphasizes the need for education policies to support systematic English-speaking courses and peer-helping learning programs. Students can overcome these obstacles and enhance their confidence, become more active in class, and enhance their overall English skill.
