Abstract

The design of the Vocational School Building at Brawijaya University in Kepanjen represents a response to climate change mitigation efforts through the application of energy efficiency principles in educational buildings. With the building sector contributing 38% of global greenhouse gas emissions, this design aims to deliver architectural solutions responsive to Malang's tropical climate, fulfill multi-departmental functional needs, and integrate energy-efficient technologies. The main strategies implemented include passive design optimization through building orientation and mass configuration adjustments, cross-ventilation system development, and strategic void additions; spatial organization optimization to support the needs of 5 departments with 16 study programs; and integration of energy-efficient technologies and sustainability principles. This performance-based approach is validated using EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) to achieve a minimum energy efficiency standard of 40%. The design results are expected to serve as a model for sustainable educational facility development in Indonesia and contribute to reducing building carbon footprints.
