Abstract

This study examines the concept of nafs in an Islamic perspective with a focus on the interpretation of Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar. Nafs, which has various meanings in Islamic literature, including lust, the breath of life, the soul, and the essence of human beings, is the subject of a complex and multidimensional discussion. Reflecting on the current rampant events, namely individuals who experience mental damage due to not knowing themselves, therefore this study will examine Buya Hamka's views regarding the three classifications of nafs according to Imam Syams Ad-Din Abi' Abdullah bin Qayyim Al-Jauzi: nafs al-mutmainnah, nafs al-lawwamah, and nafs al-ammarah. By using literature research methods and descriptive analysis, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the classification of nafs in the interpretation of Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar which is the main source in this study. Through an in-depth exploration of Tafsir Al-Azhar, this study aims to enrich the academic discourse on the concept of the soul in Islam and its implications for modern human life. In conclusion, Buya Hamka in his commentary on the classification of nafs explained that nafs ammarah tends to evil, nafs lawwamah who begins to have moral awareness and regret, and nafs muthmainnah who achieves calm and closeness to Allah.
