Abstract

Poverty is a complex issue with various dimensions, making it one of the main focuses in development goals, especially in Indonesia. The aim of this research was to estimate the effect of women’s open unemployment, women’s labor force participation, women’s mean years of schooling, the percentage of educated women, and the percentage of women who are not in school on the poverty depth index in Indonesia in 2018-2022 using a panel data regression with the Random Effects Model (REM) approach. The regression results showed that women’s open unemployment rate, women’s labor force participation, and the percentage of women who are not in school had a positive effect on the poverty depth index, while women’s mean years of schooling had a negative effect on the poverty depth index. On the other hand, the percentage of educated women had no effect on the poverty depth index. Based on the research result, the government should strengthen efforts to empower women in the labor sector through skills training and the creation of women-friendly jobs to reduce the female unemployment rate. In addition, policies are needed that support increasing women’s participant in the workforce, such as providing incentives to companies that employ women and providing child care facilities. To reduce the number of women who are not in school, the government needs to strengthen education and scholarship programs for women, especially in remote areas. Even through the percentage of educated women does not have an impact on the poverty depth index, the government still needs to maintain and improve the quality of women’s education as the basis for long-term development.
