Abstract

Technological advancement in the current generation is growing at a very high rate and relatively, monitoring of environmental parameters in poultry farms using IoT systems in general is not new. That includes the use of machines to replace manual labour provided by humans. And since machines are more efficient than humans in many ways, it implies that the machines will improve management of all activities at a great extent. Poultry diseases are one of the major problems that are faced in poultry farming. A lot of factors contribute to the spreading of these diseases in flocks and therefore being aware of them and how they spread helps in preventing the risk of them happening. Climate in poultry houses influences the wellbeing of the birds. This is in such a way that poor climatic conditions such as extreme temperatures and accumulation of dangerous gases in the poultry house exposes the birds to a risk of diseases. Furthermore, there is a problem of insecurity where un authorized people break into the poultry houses and steal the birds or even other equipment while the care takers are away. This problem is due to lack of security systems or poor security systems incase its already in place. In this project, I designed an automated system for poultry farms to monitor, control and maintain a healthy environment for poultry birds (chicken) including a security system. This was done by using wireless sensor networks and mobile communication system. This system designed uses the nodemcu esp8266 micro-controllers for programming and controlling of all the desired actions using Arduino ide, the DHT11 sensor for measuring the temperature and humidity, the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for security through obstacle detection (detecting any movements of un authorized people), an automatic water refilling system for the chicken drinkers using the water-level sensor and a smart lighting system. All the above components are combined together in form of master and the slaves where the slaves collect the data from the poultry house and send it to the master via a wiifi connection.
